How do we calculate the Time Spent metric?

The Time Spent metric is based on how long a learner is actively using Security Journey in their browser.

To keep this accurate, we use built-in browser features to understand which Security Journey tab or window the user is currently viewing and interacting with.

Here’s how it works:

  • Only one tab or window counts at a time.
    If a user has multiple Security Journey tabs open, only the active one will track time.

  • We track active interaction.
    Time is recorded only for the tab the user is actively using—not tabs running in the background.

  • Time is reported in 30-second intervals.
    The platform sends time updates every 30 seconds while the user remains active.

  • Time is saved when the user leaves.
    If the user closes the tab, switches tabs, or changes windows, we save the most recent time captured so their progress isn’t lost.
